How to Measure Your Windows for Blinds and Curtains (and When to Let a Professional Do It)
A blind that is 1 cm too wide won't fit the recess. A curtain rail that is too short leaves the curtains blocking half the window. Measuring correctly is the most important step in buying window coverings. This guide shows you how — whether you are getting a rough budget or ordering.
What you need
- A steel tape measure (cloth tapes stretch)
- A notebook — record every window separately and label it (e.g. "Bedroom 1, left")
- Measure in centimetres or millimetres, never estimate
Blinds: inside the recess
- Width: measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the recess. Use the smallest figure — walls are rarely perfectly straight.
- Height (drop): measure at the left, middle and right. Use the largest figure so the blind covers the whole window.
- Check obstructions: window handles, grills or tiles that stick out and could stop the blind from hanging straight.
Blinds: outside the recess (face fit)
- Measure the width of the opening and add about 10 cm on each side for good coverage and light blocking.
- Decide the fixing height — usually 5–10 cm above the opening — and measure the drop from there to just below the sill.

Curtains
- Rail width: the window width plus 15–25 cm on each side so the curtains stack clear of the glass when open.
- Rail height: fix the rail about 10–15 cm above the window — higher makes ceilings feel taller.
- Drop: measure from the rail to where you want the curtain to end — 1 cm above the floor, on the sill, or just below it.
- Fullness: curtain fabric should be roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times the rail width for soft folds.
Common measuring mistakes
- Measuring only once — windows are rarely square.
- Mixing centimetres and inches.
- Forgetting handles, grills and AC units near the window.
- Measuring before plastering, tiling or window installation is finished.
- Assuming "identical" windows are identical — measure each one.
