Caring for Aluminium Windows, Blinds and Partitions in Uganda's Dust and Rain
Uganda's climate is kind to people and hard on buildings: fine red dust during the dry months, heavy storms in the rainy seasons, and strong sun all year. Aluminium windows, blinds and partitions cope very well — but a few minutes of care each month keeps them smooth, weather-tight and looking new.
Aluminium windows and doors
- Frames: wash with warm water and mild soap, rinse, and wipe dry. Avoid scouring powders and wire brushes that scratch the powder coat.
- Sliding tracks: vacuum out dust and grit monthly in the dry season. Grit is what makes sliding windows stiff and wears the rollers.
- Drainage holes: keep the small slots at the bottom of sliding frames clear, especially before the rains, so water drains outside rather than into the room.
- Hinges, handles and locks: a drop of light machine oil twice a year. Wipe off the excess so it doesn't collect dust.
- Seals: if rubber gaskets crack or shrink, replace them early — they keep rain and dust out.
Glass
Clean glass with water and a little vinegar or glass cleaner and a squeegee or microfibre cloth. On frosted film, avoid ammonia-based cleaners and blades.

Blinds
- Weekly: dust with a soft brush, duster or vacuum brush attachment.
- Aluminium venetian: wipe slats with a damp cloth and mild soap.
- Fabric (zebra, roller, vertical): vacuum on low suction; spot-clean marks gently with a damp cloth.
- Mechanisms: pull chains straight down, not at an angle, and don't force a stuck blind — ask for a service instead.
Glass and aluminium partitions
Wipe frames and boards with a damp cloth. Check door hinges and closers every few months; tighten loose screws before they strip. Avoid sticking tape directly on frosted film.
Before each rainy season
- Clear drainage holes and gutters around windows and canopies.
- Check seals and sealant around frames for gaps.
- Look for rust on steel grills and canopies and touch up the paint.
