Aluminium has become the first choice for windows and doors in new Ugandan buildings — from family homes in Kira and Wakiso to offices along Kampala Road and shops in upcountry towns. It does not rot or warp like timber, it does not rust like plain steel, and a well-made aluminium frame keeps its shape for decades. But "aluminium windows" covers many different products. This guide explains the choices you will face, so you can talk confidently with your fabricator and get frames that suit your building.

1. Choose the opening style first

How a window opens matters more than its colour. The main options you will see in Uganda are:

• Sliding windows — panes slide sideways on tracks. They save space because nothing swings into the room or onto a walkway, which is why they are common in offices and bedrooms. Keep the tracks clean so they run smoothly.
• Casement windows — hinged on the side and open outwards like a door. They open fully for maximum ventilation, which is valuable in warm rooms and kitchens.
• Top-hung and fixed panels with louvres — a popular Ugandan combination: large fixed or opening glass below with a band of louvres or vents above, so air keeps moving even when it rains.
• Sliding and hinged doors — full-height sliding doors open living rooms onto verandas; hinged double doors suit main entrances and offices; double-shutter "column" doors are used where a wide opening is needed.

2. Pick the right glass

The glass you choose affects privacy, heat, light and safety:

• Clear glass for maximum light and views.
• Tinted or reflective glass to cut glare and heat on sunny sides of the building, and to add daytime privacy.
• Frosted glass or frosted film for bathrooms, office partitions and any window facing a neighbour.
• Thicker or toughened glass for large panes, doors and shop fronts where impact is more likely.

3. Frame colour and finish

Powder-coated aluminium comes in many colours. Grey and black suit modern houses and look sharp against white or grey walls. White and silver are classic for offices. Wood-grain finishes give the warmth of timber without its maintenance — a good match for homes with wooden furniture or ceilings. Ask to see a sample in daylight before you decide; colours look different indoors.

4. Security and ventilation go together

In most Ugandan homes windows need to stay open for air while still keeping the house secure. Discuss with your fabricator how to combine aluminium frames with steel burglar-proofing, grills or fly-screens. It is far neater to plan these together than to add bars later. Louvres above windows and doors let hot air escape while the main window stays locked.

5. Measure after the walls are finished

Openings on a building site are rarely perfectly square. A professional fabricator measures every opening individually once plastering is complete, then cuts and assembles each frame to fit. Frames made from "standard sizes" and forced into openings leak, rattle and jam. 6. What a good installation looks like

• Frames are level and square — sliding panes run with one finger, doors close without being lifted.
• The gap between frame and wall is properly sealed, inside and outside, so rain does not track in.
• Drainage slots in sliding tracks are open so water escapes outside.
• Handles and locks line up and lock easily.
• Glass is clean, with no scratches, and protective film is removed.

7. Caring for aluminium windows

Aluminium needs very little care: wash frames with mild soapy water, vacuum dust out of sliding tracks, and put a drop of light oil on hinges and locks now and then. Avoid harsh abrasives that scratch the powder coat. Replace worn rubber seals or rollers early and your windows will keep working for many years.
