Curtains or Blinds? Choosing Window Coverings for Ugandan Homes and Offices
When you move into a new home or office, window coverings are one of the first things you need — for privacy, for the heat of the afternoon sun, and simply to make rooms feel finished. The big question is whether to choose curtains, blinds, or both. Each has real strengths. This guide walks through them so you can choose confidently.
What curtains do best
- Softness and elegance. Fabric adds warmth, colour and texture that make living rooms and bedrooms feel homely.
- Layering. A sheer curtain for daytime privacy plus a heavier lined or blackout curtain for night gives two looks in one window.
- Sound. Heavy fabrics absorb echo in rooms with tiled floors — very common in Ugandan homes.
- Hiding imperfect windows. Curtains hung wider and higher than the window make it look larger and more balanced.
What blinds do best
- Precise light control — tilt, roll or slide to exactly the level you want.
- Clean lines for modern interiors and offices.
- Less dust and space. Blinds sit close to the glass, don't touch the floor and don't collect as much dust — a real advantage near busy, dusty roads.
- Kitchens and bathrooms, where fabric near water or cookers is impractical.

Why not both?
Many of the most comfortable rooms combine a blind (for everyday light control) with curtains at the sides (for colour and softness). It is a common choice in living rooms and master bedrooms.
Getting curtains made properly
- Measure the rail, not just the window. Rails should extend beyond the window so curtains can stack clear of the glass.
- Choose the length: just touching the floor looks tailored; sill-length suits windows above furniture.
- Allow fullness — curtains should be wider than the rail so they fall in soft folds when closed.
- Pick the right lining — unlined for airy sheers, lined for body, blackout for bedrooms.
