Generic boxed Mama Kit Plus

world health organization (WHO) supports low cost technology initiatives worldwide aimed at advancing safe motherhood.

In line with this mandate, Gordon and Raymond sanitary supplies limited has supported this initiative to introduce the maama kit plus

as a cost effective intervention to reduce the infections associated with childbirth.

The kit strikes a balance between the ideal requirements for a clean and safe child birth and practical realities and gaps on the groundespecially in the rural low resourced settings.

Maama kit plus has been well planned and executed and hence will improve on the quality and utilization of reproductive health services. It will improve on the often strained relationship between health workers and expectant mothers.

Contents of the maama kit plus

10 pairs of surgical gloves. These are used by midwives for protection and prevention of infections. More pairs have been included

as some can be used by your caregiver while nursing you after birth.

One cotton wool 500g. Will be used for cleaning, draining and drying the mother during and after birth.

Maternity pads. Used to prevent further bleeding after birth. Reduces on the complaints of abdominal pain which might result from

unclean materials used for padding.

Surgical blades (2). Are meant to carry out episiotomy by a midwife during second stage of labor and for surgical purposes for a C

section mother.

Delivery sheets (2). For hygiene maintenance purposes, mothers need polythene to prevent infections from the beds they lay on

directly during delivery. And are also used to lie on other items being used during delivery.

 Disinfectant, bleach has been included to prevent germs and to clean areas where the mother has delivered from, both, room and the

bed. Will also be used for cleaning and washing the mother’s garments that may be soiled during birth.

 Gauze (2). Used together with cotton to drain and dry blood from the mother after birth. Due to the nature of cotton, it may leave

particles in the mother’s body which is harmful and to prevent this from happening, gauze is wrapped around each piece of cotton

before use.

Soap. This is needed for both cleaning the mother after birth and washing hands by the health workers after delivery.

 Child health growth card/ immunization card. During postpartum period and immediately the baby is born he or she is immunized to

prevent against several diseases. This card is required for record keeping and you will be required to have it handy every time you are

visiting the hospital

Umbilical cord tie. The umbilical cord is the baby’s lifeline to the mother during pregnancy. within a few minutes after birth, the cord is

clamped and cut close to the navel .the cord tie helps stop bleeding from the blood vessels in the umbilical cord.
